Cigarette butts are one of the top polluting items in the world when it comes to litter. Millions of butts are tossed out in Canada alone – adding to the estimated 4.5 trillion globally each year. The Butt Blitz educates Canadians about the impacts of cigarette butt litter and provide solutions that will help protect the environment from its effects. Volunteers pick up hundreds of thousands of cigarette butts throughout the event each year and send them to be recycled.
Many smokers don’t realize that cigarette butts are bad for the environment and many don’t even consider them to be litter. The filters are made of cellulose acetate which is a type of plastic. Not only do the filters trap a number of toxins that can leach out when they come in contact with water, but they also release plastic microfibres into the environment as they degrade.
Through the Butt Blitz project we educate smokers and the general public about these issues to help them make educated decisions on proper disposal. We want to ensure that smokers get the facts and that we can offer them solutions. One of those solutions is the pocket ashtray, an item we give out at our events.
We anticipate picking up hundreds of thousands of cigarette butts in a variety of locations across Canada. Our event coordinators will collect a lot of information during the Blitz: location information, number of volunteers, number of butts collected, number of pocket ashtrays handed out, and more. This way we can count our impact!
